Sister Duo Create Real Soap! - Natural, Home-Made Soap Products that are made in Newfoundland
After being laid off from her job making beauty products, Marina Cole had a great desire to continue making handmade soaps.

A former laboratory technician, she enjoyed the precision of soapmaking. However, having noticed her own reaction to artificial fragrances, she knew she wanted to go the natural route. "So many people have allergies to chemicals in beauty products, especially fragrances. I wanted to be different. I wanted to make a quality product that could be used by people with sensitivities." She decided to partner up with her sister Sarah Hansen, a graphic designer and small business owner. Marina would make the soap, Sarah would design the labels. It was the perfect partnership. They now have ten different soaps available, and a powdered laundry soap. They also make custom guest soaps for B&Bs around the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Sarah designs custom labels for the B&Bs, which adds a personal touch

The ingredients in Real Soap! are all natural: coconut oil, vegetable shortening, and canola oil plus pure essential oils for fragrance. Essential oils, which are used in aromatherapy, come directly from nature. They are derived from flowers, fruits, leaves, barks, roots, herbs and spices. People are much less likely to be allergic to essential oils, and the oils have many therapeutic properties.

Sarah and Marina plan to add to their product line over time, but neither are in a hurry. "We want to take it slow. We're both very laid-back people, so this pace suits us," says Sarah. They now have their soaps in seven stores (six in St. John's, one in Corner Brook), and are working on a liquid laundry detergent. They are constantly looking for new soap-based products they can add to their line.

"We love research and development. It keeps our brains working, keeps us sharp," says Marina.
