Brian Lasagaar
Brian was born in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, on November 1, 1955. He was raised in St. Teresa's, Newfoundland, until he was nine years old. His hometown is St. George's, Newfoundland, where he still lives today. He began drawing at an early age doing portraits of his elementary classmates. By his late teens, he tried his hand at painting, doing mostly wildlife, birds, portraits, and local scenes in watercolours. He did not take up painting full time until 1980, when he started experimenting with oils, acrylics, gouache, and egg tempera. He finally decided that acrylic was the medium for him because of the high detail it achieved and also because of acrylic's fast drying qualities, which enables him to layer a great deal. Acrylics also allow better glazing, which is an important consideration for Brian in every painting he does.

Brian is self taught and learned how to paint through trial and error. In the spring of 1981, he had his first show, and was successful in selling all his work. Since then Brian has had a number of shows in Atlantic Canada. One of his paintings is currently hanging in the Canadian Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, while a 24 X 36 is in the Province of Newfoundland's permanent collection. In 1992, one of Brian's pieces was chosen as one of 50 finalists in the category, from over 11,000 entries worldwide in Artist's Magazine art competition in the United States. Brian takes hundreds of photographs and is always striving for three dimensional effects.
